Zagg earbuds, the z.buds…

zbud_award_01

I admit it, I have an iPhone, and I love it, but I hate the ear buds that come with it.   So the other day I was talking to the great Shane Lowry and he had mentioned that he picked up some z.buds.   I was in the market really for a new blue tooth head set since I have been doing a lot of driving, I have been using the Apple ear buds with the built-in mic, and they have been at best “ok”.    So going on the advice of Shane, and a 35% coupon, I picked up the z.buds.  I’ve had them officially 2 days, they are noise canceling and the sound out of them is A-W-E-S-O-M-E, don’t go spending $99 on the Bose earbuds, when you can get a better sound, with a mic, for much less.

Terminal on the iPhone 3G

I have to admit, I don’t have the 3G iPhone, but the title got your attention didn’t it?  I do actually have an iPhone, so this still applies.   Prior to iPhone OS version 2, I had my iPhone Jailbroken, it was then that the iPhone was truly the best mobile device out.   I had mobileterminal, a required application for me since I manage a bunch of linux servers. ( you can see my prior post with it here.)

Fast forward now to version 2, with app store.  Apple has made some good improvements with the iPhone base package and software, no longer are your apps just bookmarks, but you can actually do stuff on your iPhone.  There is some really cool apps out.  (granted, when Jailbroken, most of those apps where free, or at least a try before buy)   Keeping true to Apples tight control over the products, Apple fans claim it’s for “quality control” reasons, I have yet to drink that koolaide, app store applications for iTunes has to be approved by Apple and of course they will not approve a terminal application on the iPhone, this would open the iPhone up beyond their control.   (please Apple, prove me wrong)

So I have been thinking of ways to go around this, it hit me, Leopard has VNC built in, the app store has Mocha VNC Lite, the two can mean you have a pretty “round about” terminal app.   It’s really a pain to use, but it does work if your in a mess and need it quickly.

3G Hype…

So today the new 3G iPhone came out, I’m hoping to get the full scoop on it from ImpossileFactory.

Here is a pic of the line my co-worker was in (also the author of the great posts on the above site) Might I also mention that his wife is probably going to go in labor any minute.  I predict baby RR V2 before he gets his new iphone!  :-)

(I’m happy for now with my “old” iPhone..  we’ll see what cool stuff the guys at IF find out)

iTunes just finished downloading V2 for my iPhone and it’s syncing now. :-)

Below is a pic of the local ATT store line on my way home from the gym/sb.

a new kind of stereo for your home (or office)

A few weeks ago while browsing at our local Sams Club, we stumbled in the electronics section and found this JBL Radial speaker set for you iPod.   I had to try it with my iPhone, the JBL demo unit was begging for some action, I didn’t know if it work with the iPhone, but sure enough, it did, and boy did it ever, it sounded awesome.   Great sounds. A store worker came over and said he had not it yet and was amazed by the sound. To make a long story a tad shorter than long, we bought it that night and took it home. After I unboxed, I docked my iPhone and set it out on the deck.  What a perfect solution, I have been debating on outdoor speakers, a kitchen radio, and some speaker for the shower area, this does the job perfectly.

Pros:  awesome sound (indoors and outdoors), very portable, works with both my iPhone and iPod, has a remote, priced well under the BOSE system with similar sound (demo’d both at Samsclub)

Cons:  stronger bass which is not adjustable, personally I like it sound, just wish it was adjustable.

I highly recommend getting one of these.  (SamsClub has them for around $129 at time of this posting)

Jailbreak…

When I said the word Jailbreak to a few of my non-tech friends they thought I was talking about a TV show or a movie.   Little did they know I was talking about my iPhone.   I decided the other day to Jailbreak it and am pleasantly surprised with it.

Now rewind, I had a Blackberry before this, and was very very impressed with the blackberry and the features it offers, it’s a very stable message machine. There are a lot of third party apps that you can install on it and the little features really keep you hooked.  Ok, now fast forward to present, I have put my Blackberry down for an iPhone, yes I got pulled into getting an iPhone.  Now after a few weeks, I wanted to jot my feelings down before v2 comes out.

Pros-

  • The mail app on the iPhone is second to none.  Very good for apple. They killed the BB when it comes to email.
  • Web browsing on the iPhone is incredible. Safari is just incredible.
  • The camera is great.  Just fine for on the go snaps.
  • the iPod is awesome
  • photo browser ROCKS!
  • wifi is awesome

Cons:

  • SMS sucks on the iPhone, how apple got that wrong I don’t know.  Why do I hate it you ask? Sick back, this could get long:
  1. ATT/Apple can’t decide who a SMS is from if it’s sent from a computer, i.e. email -> sms,   since my servers use SMS to talk to me and notify me of changes, can’t group them or see the contacts or delete a lot of them if a server spikes and I get 15 SMS’s at one time..
  2. the “google” preview of an SMS is limited to 2 lines, in mail you can change your preview to your desired length, not true in SMS.
  3. SMS tones are very very limited. Hello apple, I use my iPhone to wake me up when a server goes down, don’t ring a bell once!
  4. SMS is limited in features, what happened to MMS, I own one of the most multi-media savy phones, and I can’t even send a picture via SMS.  We won’t talk about video (the complete lack of).
  • Lack of application support. You can’t do anything but play music, read email, and surf the web/photos.
Now enter Jailbreak…  the title of this entry.
I used ziphone to Jailbreak my phone.  AMAZING!  This is what the iphone should be like.  Quit dragging your feet apple. I can now manage my server with ssh and terminal.  A side note, I think Apple should work on the next terminal.app off of mobileterm, since the new mac has a multitouch pad, we could fly with term! :-)
